The ‘Alternative’ Wrestling Awards for 2012

2012 will forever be remembered by wrestling fans as the year of Claire Lynch.

It’s that time of year where every wrestling outlet is contractually obliged to churn out another end of year awards article! We understand you’ve probably read your fair share of them by now, and we understand that you all have your own opinions on who the very best of the year where. So allow us to present our ever-so-slightly different take on the year in wrestling, with awards categories that aren’t really covered by our prestigious brothers and sisters. Allow us to introduce our awards for some of the less prestigious yet no less deserving wrestlers and moments of the…

A Big Thank You From Collar & Elbow’s Editor

A Big Thank You From Collar & Elbow’s Editor

2012 REALLY HAS BEEN quite some year, a year of great achievement and national pride. No, I’m not talking about the Diamond Jubilee. I’m not even talking about the Olympics. I am, in fact, talking about the success of CollarAndElbow.com’s first year. It was only in February 2012 that this very website went live, kicking straight off with an interview with TNA star Samoa Joe. From the outset, I had a vision for the site – to bring together a small team of wrestling journalists from around the UK, and to write about the sport that we love. I didn’t…

Wrestling and Social Media – ENOUGH ALREADY?

RyderTout590

Anyone who has watched ANY kind of wrestling show within the past year or so will know that the companies have been pushing “social media”. WWE and TNA are both pushing it hard but WWE seems to be at the forefront here with the Twitter tags of their Superstars appearing under their names during their entrances and the Tout videos from fans featuring during their broadcasts. Don’t get me wrong, social media can be a very useful tool in a live television show when used correctly. We can vote on matches or make Daniel Bryan and Kane hug in the middle…

A Hard-Hitting Tribute

Batista WWE

Earlier today, collarandelbow’s Carl Jonsson wrote about his love for high flying wrestling, encapsulated by the likes of Jeff Hardy and The X Division. Now, Chris Pilkington offers a few words in support of the brawlers, the bruisers and the bad asses. Don’t get me wrong. I pretty much agree with everything Carl said in his tribute to the high flyers. I concur that the fast-paced excitement of a top notch cruiserweight match is a thing of breath-taking beauty and a real spectacle to behold. And like Carl and our editor Ben, I too find myself captivated by the technical…

A High-Flying Tribute

x-division

We all, as fans, got into wrestling for different reasons – and each of us can name particular moments that garnered our attention and stayed with us. While I have always appreciated a good sound technical wrestler (such as our editor’s favourite, Bret Hart), for me personally, the style that kept me coming back was the high risk, high reward style of wrestling. For me, that’s the kind of wrestling that leads to moments where your jaw truly hits the floor in awe of what is transpiring before you. It’s probably explained, in part, by the fact that I am…

To be the man, you’ve got to be … somebody.

Alberto-del-rio-2011-wwe-draft-wwe-raw-22387535-615-385

Character development is the key ingredient to success in wrestling, according to our newest contributor. Here’s why: In professional wrestling – whether it be WWE, TNA, ROH or any other promotion – as important as the action that takes place in the squared circle is, it is the characters that make the difference. One might argue that surely both are equally as important, but looking at the way wrestling works, that just isn’t the case. To use an example: if we had two people competing in the ring and (going with the WWE way of booking matches) following a list…

Unpacking the ‘Science Of Wrestling’

ScienceOfWrestling

Collar & Elbow Wrestling’s Ben Veal is very happy today. Why? Because his long-awaited article, The Science Of Wrestling has just been published in Guru Magazine. Find out what it’s all about… Four months ago, I had an idea. It was an idea inspired by a lifetime of having my love for professional wrestling questioned and ridiculed. I decided that I would write an article which would tackle some of wrestling’s biggest misconceptions and refute some of the ridiculous statements and misnomers that I have heard from friends and peers alike over the past 20 years, such as: “Why do you…
