London-based PROGRESS Wrestling celebrated its first year in business this past Easter Sunday with its most star studded show to date. Now that the show is available to buy on DVD from progresswrestling.com, we ask whether Chapter Six: We Heart Violence lived up to the lofty highs of its predecessors or did Progress take a step back? Chris Pilkington finds out… Dave Mastiff vs Noam Dar It was perhaps fitting that on Easter Sunday the show started off Old Testament style with a real life David vs Goliath match, only The Goliath in this story was called Dave, confusing the formula no end. This is a number one contenders match for the Progress championship which just so happens to be a bird on the end of a stick. Bird on a stick? Where have I heard that before? The unique Progress crowd seem to know a lot about Dave Mastiff, insinuating through chants that he may have been born out of wedlock, but they still like him anyway. How very modern of them. The great thing about the dynamic between Noam Dar and Mastiff is that we really get to see a different side to Dar. We know he’s a [...]

This past week on Raw, Paul Heyman unveiled Joe Hennig as his newest client. Richard Hattersley looks at the third generation star’s biggest opportunity yet… Prior to the main event of the 2013 Royal Rumble, The Rock posted a photo of himself and his training partner on his Twitter account as he prepared for his showdown with CM Punk for the WWE championship. Standing beside ‘The Great One’ was Joe Hennig, who The Rock called ‘talented, tough and humble”. With such an endorsement from The People’s Champion, just why was the man who went by the moniker Michael McGilicutty floundering in the prelims? On Monday night’s Raw, the son of Mr. Perfect was given the biggest opportunity thus far in his less-than-perfect career. Throughout the show there was speculation surrounding the announcement of the latest recruit to Paul Heyman’s stable. With CM Punk on hiatus to recover from a knee injury and burn-out after his historic championship reign and Brock Lesnar’s infrequent appearances, Heyman was in need of a new prospect. But who was to be bestowed the tremendous opportunity to work with the ‘mad scientist’? Paul Heyman prefaced his announcement by declaring; in his inimitable style that: “It’s time [...]

Shark Boy has been one of the most colourful characters in recent professional wrestling history. The 38-year-old from the Deep Blue Sea was a top Indy wrestler and featured on shows shown on ABC, MTV and The Discovery Channel. Shark Boy also spent time with WCW and featured on Saturday Night and Thunder. But it was in TNA that Shark Boy had most of his success, during the memorable spell mimicking Stone Cold Steve Austin with the popular ‘Oh Shell Yeah’ gimmick. Joshua Modaberi caught up with Shark Boy to talk about ruining a SmackDown television taping, what Steve Austin thought of his gimmick and much more… How did you first get into the sport of professional wrestling? I became a fan at about the age of 11-years-old, and I just kind of started telling everybody I wanted to become a wrestler, people laughed at the notion and I’m not a really big guy and enough people told me I couldn’t do it and that made me really want to do it. When I was 20-years-old I met a guy called Les Thatcher who was just about to open a wrestling school in Cincinnati, Ohio. When I met him I told him [...]

Kenta Kobashi ascended the top rope for the final time. The veteran landed on Kanemaru with a moonsault to provide a happy ending to his illustrious career. His tag team partners joined the referee in counting the three count. A career that started in 1988 was now over. Kenta Kobashi had retired. On 11 May 2013, Kenta Kobashi, one of the greatest of all time, wrestled his final match, tagging with Jun Akiyama, Keiji Mutoh and Kensuke Sasaki to defeat his protégés, Go Shiozaki, Kenta, Maybach Taniguchi and Yoshinobu Kanemaru, in front of a sold out crowd, and movie theatres around Japan. It was quite fitting that after the match, there wasn’t a dry eye in the arena during the retirement ceremony for a man that is renowned for inducing tears through his ferociously hard chops. The ceremony ended in an extraordinary visual. The 17,000 fans in Nippon Budokan adorned their Wrestling hero with the ultimate respect, a cavalcade of streamers. The procession of streamers and confetti rained from the rafters, as the crowd chanted, ‘KO – BASH – HI!’ The Television screens across the country showing these scenes were momentarily blurred with purple due to the extent of the cascade of [...]

As it looks like Brock Lesnar and Triple H have finally finished their marathon feud, Richard Hattersley looks at what’s next for the former Ultimate Fighting Champion… “I’ve always approached pro wrestling as it were real. I compete with the utmost intensity.” – Brock Lesnar, May 2013, Muscle and Fitness Magazine. Since Brock Lesnar’s return to the squared circle in 2012, he has performed with unparalleled authenticity. The sudden burst of his theme is enough to send the fans into frenzy, anticipating the unleashing of carnage usually only seen from a destructive stomp from Godzilla. Lesnar performs with the aura of a fighter: not someone playing the part of a fighter, but someone who could genuinely cause harm. Look no further than watching him decimate 3MB with ease, or effortlessly hurling a sofa at The Miz to see the toughness and suspension of disbelief that he can bring to the product. With the return of Lesnar, many fans were salivating at the potential bouts that Paul Heyman’s client would be involved in. Lesnar is an anomaly in current pro wrestling. He brings with him the scary sense of aggression and unpredictability that is often missing from many superstar’s in-ring repertoire. So [...]

January 27, 2008. The Royal Rumble battle royal is reaching its climax as the likes of Triple H, Mark Henry and Umaga battle for supremacy. Only one man is left to enter the ring: lucky number thirty, the final entrant. The buzzer sounds and there is a moment of silence. Every person in the Madison Square Garden crowd turns towards the narrow entrance way. Finally, the opening strains of ‘My Time Is Now’ hits and John Cena returns after four months on the injured list to a thunderous reaction. Since that unexpected return, John Cena has rarely had more than a week away from WWE television. He’s battled through injury, divorce, storyline firings and flat-out exhaustion to appear week in and week out at WWE’s flagship television and PPV events. It’s certainly commendable that he does so, and rarely with complaint, but isn’t it about time that the man took a break? An unexpected heel turn Cena recently suffered an Achilles tendon injury whilst competing on the company’s European tour. The injury doesn’t appear to be as serious as was first suggested and Cena will be able to fulfil his match obligations against Ryback at Extreme Rules. It certainly helps WWE in the [...]

You know those people in life that really annoy you be being great at everything they do? Mick Foley should be one of them. A former WWE and TNA world heavyweight champion and recent WWE Hall of Fame inductee, Foley is also the author of numerous fiction and non-fiction books for both adults and children (and a New York Times bestselling author, no less), actor and now he’s a successful stand-up comedian to boot. His success should annoy you, but it doesn’t – because despite his many accomplishments, it’s just impossible to dislike Foley. His overwhelming warmth, generosity and humility, combined with being an ambassador for numerous charities and all things Christmas-related, makes Mick Foley one of professional wrestling’s ‘good guys’ … and not just in storyline terms. Despite making a name for himself as ‘The Hardcore Legend’, the ‘King of the Death Match’, the man who famously lost his ear in Germany in a match with barbed wire for ropes and, of course, the man who took two hellacious falls in that career-defining Hell In A Cell match, the real Mick Foley really is a gentle giant; a man with both a terrific sense of humour and self-awareness – rare qualities [...]

Look past the camp name and cartoonish logo, and the introduction of In Your House to the WWF’s pay-per-view calendar in May 1995 marked a sizable change in direction for the company: a change that is still felt by the industry to this day. Under pressure from a soon-to-be dominant WCW, In Your House events were introduced to run each and every month in between the WWF’s ‘big five’ shows: Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, King of the Ring, SummerSlam and Survivor Series. It was, in many ways, a curious time for the WWF to increase its pay-per-view output: 1995 is regarded by many longtime fans as a creative low point for the company, which had seen live event gates and TV ratings plummeting with Kevin ‘Diesel’ Nash at the helm as world champion. Creative issues aside, however, at the time of its introduction In Your House was a wonderfully naive and soft affair, with superstars emerging from the setpiece of a mock Floridian home, and the show hosted by perennial ’90s favourite Todd Pettengill, who is fondly remembered by old-school fans, even if it is in a very tongue-in-cheek way. So it’s a stroke of genius that WWE have lured back the quirky Pettengill to present [...]

In this new, three disc-set, available to buy now on DVD and Blu-Ray at WWEDVD.co.uk (yes, that was a cheap pop), WWE takes a retrospective look at one of the most riveting wrestling stories of his generation. Spanning some 30 years, this release attempts to cram as much content as fits into three hours. CM Punk accurately summarised the career of Mick Foley in just one sentence – “wrestling dialled up to eleven” – and this DVD is a testament of one underdog’s journey to the top of his industry. I greatly enjoyed having the opportunity to share in Mick Foley’s journey one more time. This DVD however, is not for those that want to see the carnage and self-destruction that Foley inflicted on himself during those early years. Those that do, should go and purchase DVDs of old ECW events. This is the thinking mans autobiography; a DVD that requires intelligence but not, in essence, any wrestling knowledge, but rather just an ounce or two of emotional intelligence. That is how good this DVD is. It does not require insider knowledge. It does not require you to know the difference between a ‘face’ and a ‘heel’. It does not need you [...]

After sustaining a catalogue of injuries in the main event of WrestleMania 29, Richard Hattersley asks whether this is the last we will ever see of The Rock in the squared circle… “Was it my last match? Possibly. I’m not too sure, and I wouldn’t rule it out.” - Dwayne Johnson in a recent interview with Peter Rosenberg posted on 22 April 2013. After both hitting their finishers multiple times, The Rock finally succumbed to a decisive Attitude Adjustment from John Cena in the closing moments of their second WrestleMania clash. In a sign of mutual respect, they two men shook hands after the match. The new champion, John Cena, left the ring to allow The Rock to soak in the appreciation from the capacity crowd for possibly the last time. In noticeable pain when leaving the ring, The Rock walked around ringside to kiss his family members, before heading up the ramp.
